A Midsummer Night's Dream

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a comedy written by William Shakespeare c. 1595 or 1596.

The play is set in Athens and consists of several subplots that revolve around the marriage of Theseus and Hippolyta. One subplot involves a conflict between four Athenian lovers. Another follows a group of six amateur actors rehearsing the play, which they are to perform before the wedding. Both groups find themselves in a forest inhabited by fairies who manipulate the humans and engage in domestic intrigue.

The sketches on the left are a preliminary design. The upper drawing is the floor plan and effects, and the below is the watercolor corresponding above. This is the first step in concept and design integration, and it reflects the critical points of the design. There're four scenes in this play, which are the myth world, the palace, the cottage, and the forest. In addition, according to the relationship between the characters, it is found that the myth world and the other three scenes alternate frequently. Therefore, solving this problem is the key to the design. That's why there's an arched platform on the stage, which divides the stage into upper and lower parts, thus solving the problem of scene alternation.

第一幕 第一场:模型细节   Act 1 Scene 1: Model Details

This scene happens in the Theseus's Palace, Athen city. To show the solemn atmosphere on stage, the texture and the shape of the backdrop follow the ancient Greek palace. The door in the middle can be opened, and the actors can come in and out. It makes the show more reactional and reasonable.

第一幕 第二场:模型细节   Act 1 Scene 2: Model Details

This scene happens in the Quince's house (mostly). There're many pieces of furniture on the set which can allow actors to sit. The floor above is a different scene, and it is the most creative design for the show. It is a fairy world (myth), which is full of mystery and coincident.

The woods are the most important scene in the show. Almost half of the story happens here. The large wood sticks are making the trees pop out from the backdrop. Upstair is similar to the above, adding more elements in this scene.
